RISE with Green Bee Life in Honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This past year has presented many challenges including for breast cancer prevention with setbacks in screenings and early detection. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, this year an estimated 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer as well as 49,290 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States. An estimated 43,600 women will die from breast cancer this year.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month helps raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer.

Join us in rising to the challenges together all month in doing what we can to help improve the lives of women everywhere.

Early detection, better screening, increased awareness and improving treatment options are our best defenses.

We also thought it might be helpful to share how medical marijuana and CBD may fit into a patient's treatment plan and wellness routine.

Among the most frequently asked questions doctors on the topic include: How is medical marijuana used to treat breast cancer patients? Aren there known benefits vs. risks? Can marijuana cure cancer? What is the best way to ingest marijuana to treat breast cancer? How does THC differ from CBD?

Although there have been promising lab studies, more research is needed to evaluate whether medical marijuana cures cancer. Existing research suggests that cannabis and many of its compounds including, but not limited to THC and CBD, may someday be proven to prevent, slow or even kill tumors. Medical marijuana is most often used in combination with traditional cancer treatments and its benefits have not been evaluated by the FDA.

Science based and data driven research on the potential benefits of cannabinoids in breast cancer therapy is underway. Cannabidiol’s potential to help inhibit the Id-1 gene whose primary function induces the growth of cancer cells in the breast is being studied. Due to decades of marijuana prohibition cannabis research and medicine is a relatively new and growing sector in the U.S. healthcare industry.

With inconsistent rules and regulations and the proliferation of online and retail CBD products, trusted and credible information remains hard to come by.

When researching how exactly CBD can help fight breast cancer, I was struck to learn that the bulk of scientific papers published and referenced are by authors from outside the U.S.

Dr. David Bearman, Co-founder, of the American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine, cannabis advocate and author whose latest book "Cannabis Medicine: A Guide to the Practice of Cannabinoid Medicine" educates medical professionals on the science of the endocannabinoid system in the human body.

One goal of the American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine is to marginalize those doctors like the doc in Venice Beach who has the gal in the bikini out front saying a medical marijuana evaluation is $39.95. Cannabis is a real medicine. It deserves more respect than that."

Dr. Bearman

Also pioneering the mainstream use of cannabis in healthcare is Stacy Shymansky, Founder & CEO, of Medicine Women Consulting, an integrative health care company that combines cutting-edge alternative therapies with powerful new healing protocols, including Cannabinoid Therapy, Meridian Energy Analysis (MEA), and Plant-Based Enzyme Treatments. Dr. Bearman serves as Medicine Women's Director of Medicine.

The University of San Diego recently launched an online cannabis Healthcare and Medicine Certificate program. The program’s Co-Founder and CEO, Dr. Jessica Knox, MD, MBA, MPH is a board-certified preventative medicine physician who received her bachelor’s degree from Harvard University before going on to earn her medical and business degrees from Tufts University. After completing her residency in preventive medicine, Dr. Knox began her study of the endocannabinoid system, and is recognized as an expert in the t fields of Endocannabinology and cannabinoid medicine. Dr. Knox believes that all-natural medicine, including cannabis, "a natural medicine," should be the first-line approach in medical care.

An end to cannabis prohibition and its restrictive hold on medical cannabis research will unleash the power of our US intellect, science and technology to exhaust ALL possible sources to treat and defeat cancer.

In 1981 my mother was first diagnosed with breast cancer, which ultimately took her life. Like cannabis, “early detection,” let alone “breasts,” were topics not discussed.

Cannabis like breasts are no longer taboo and the conversation has begun!
