Calculating CBD in Homemade Dog Treats with Easy Recipe

“How much CBD should I add to my homemade dog treats?” Recommendations for CBD dosages for dogs vary widely, so our founder Maria Calabrese and her pup MJ sniffed out a simple calculation you can do to figure out how much CBD oil to add to your dog’s DIY treats. Then, Maria whips up a batch of healthy peanut butter and pumpkin dog treats with VetCBD Hemp Tincture for Dogs & Cats.

Dog CBD Dosage Calculation

Online sources are riddled with inconsistent dosage recommendations, with some claiming an ideal dosage of 1 mg or higher per pound of your pet’s body weight. So we tapped into our veterinarian resources to arrive at a conservative 2.0 - 2.5 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of your pet's body weight. If your pet tolerates this dosage well, you can increase the dosage slightly and slowly to find their optimal dose.

The formula we demonstrated also corresponds with the Canine Journal’s guidelines and most premium pet hemp CBD oil brands’ suggested use. It’s important to consult with your veterinarian for personalized dosing advice based on your pet’s unique health needs.

Here’s the calculation we used to determine the best dosage for MJ.

2MG - 2.5MG CBD PER 10LB

We divided MJ’s 30 pounds of body weight by 10 = 3 and multiplied 3 x 2.5mg (per 10LB body weight) = 7.5mg

Dosage Charts for Reference

We have included for you a visual dosage chart to reference when planning the amount of CBD oil to use in your own dog treat recipes.  It's a handy reference to get you started on calculating dosages for your own needs.  In addition, we have provided a calculation that you can use to know how much CBD oil to use for your own dog depending on weight.
If you would like to do the math for your own particular dog's weight, you can use the following formula:
Weight of your pet x 0.2 mg / lb = number of mg per treat x number of treats = total mg of CBD needed
Example: 15 lb dog x 0.2mg / lb = 3mg / treat x 50 treats = 150mg total needed for the recipe

Easy Dog Treat Recipe

Ingredients
1 ½ cups oats
⅔ cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
½ cup peanut butter
Optional: CBD oil
Directions
  1. Preheat your oven to 300℉.
  2. Add the oats to a food processor. Grind them until you reach a dry powder.
  3. Add the pumpkin, peanut butter, and CBD oil if using. Blend to combine until you have a sticky dough.
  4. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface. You can use brown rice flour or almond flour if your dog is sensitive to wheat flour. You can also set aside some of the ground oats to use for this as well.
  5. Use a cookie cutter or knife to cut and customize the shape and size of your dog’s treats. If you’re using CBD, the size and number of treats will depend on how many servings and dosage based on your dog’s weight. (See the calculation above.)
  6. Lay them on the parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake for about 20 to 25 minutes or until dry and firm. If you make larger-sized treats, they may take a little longer to bake.
